There's not a massive amount of things to say really, when the main appeal of these sorts of games is just HOW the controls feel - and it's just done very smoothly and nicely in the Reignited Trilogy. Characters are generally funny and nicely animated, with attention to detail when expected. The music and overall atmosphere are well defined in each world. Running, charging, jumping, flaming and gliding all work great though and it does feel just right to do all these things. The basic controls are smooth and responsive, while the camera is a bit slow to turn, there's a quick center-behind button as well. The dragon boss in Spyro 3, the jumping puzzle in Spyro 1's Tree Tops level and the various Hunter side-objectives in 2 & 3 being the main ones.īut pretty much all of this stuff is optional, so if you just want a laid-back approach to collecting a load of stuff, exploring all the worlds and flaming and charging all the baddies, you can absolutely have that and it's a lot of fun all-round. There's not a lot of truly taxing or difficult stuff in any of the games, but the few examples of that are rather big. You're never too far away from the next thing to pick up, or little area to explore, or minor puzzle to solve. Whether it's dragons, eggs, keys, gems or orbs that you're searching for, everything feels exact and tailored to keep the gameplay pace well-tuned and quick. These are comprehensive collectathons with plenty of character to them. The gameplay is where it's all at though.
I struggled a little bit with that as an adult, but hey if you can indulge in it then it's just fine. These games do rather take on a childish feel in a lot of ways, the story of all three feels that way and mostly in the second game. I had no other issues playing this at a smooth 60fps for the entire trilogy. Just go in to the menu and hit the 30fps limit for that one bit, and you're fine.
Nostalgia isn't the only thing holding this remaster up it turns out that the original three Spyro games have stood the test of time and are still fun to play, even if it's your first time like it was for me.ĭo be aware there's at least one moment in the Alpine Ridge level, where the framerate can cause a door to get stuck closed.
